May 21, 2015 · Trunk release not working properly. I have a 2011 Malibu LT. My trunk release has not been working properly. It will work every now and then, but most of the time I'll push the button and hear a loud, rapid clicking noise- like it's trying to open but is too weak. The emergency release works fine. I have swapped out the relay and nothing changes.

You cannot get to it from under the bumper because the locking mechanism is in the trunk lid. There is one suspicious hole in the lid trim liner, so I may investigate further.
