If you are doing a standing set, bend your legs as the ball arrives to you, then explode upward. That will give you power. If you are doing a jump set then it's all arms and shoulders. You could use your legs a little more; in some of the sets you use them well and it makes the ball go higher.
If you love volleyball, ask the coach for direct feedback of what you need to work on to be the best you can be. I don't think from what you shared, that they have lied to you. From my experience Asics volleyball shoes are quite wide. I have wider feet and while Nike shoes are almost always narrow to me, Asics are always a perfect fit. I have Asics Volley Elite FF atm and they are by far the best volleyball shoe I've ever had. I had some cheaper Asics before but the fit was great as well.
