On the pilot jet air screw you turn it in until it is just barely bottomed - do not tighten it - then back it out the specified turns. That is your starting place for a good idle. You can tweak the screw in or out up to a full turn to get a nice smooth idle without any missing or lumpyness on a fully warmed engine.

The most common problem is that the shift rod is out of adjustment. It's probably moving too far towards the low gear and when it high it's not locked in all of the way. I am posting the adjustment diagram below. If adjusting it doesn't help you out then you know that chances are there are worn parts in the engine.
