Well the 3rd gen grips are cheap $25. Id put a piece of masking tape on the grip metal and sand with something hard backed. Wrap 150 or 180 in something flat and hard you can control. I also use a piece of broom stick handle for the inside radius wrapped in 180. Finish with one of those foam two sided finger nail files women use.A 1979 SAA would be 3rd Generation. I think plain smooth Walnut stocks would be correct for that vintage. Sometime in the mid to late 1980s I think Colt started using walnut stocks with gold or silver medallions. I have two 3rd Generation 4 3/4" SAAs with Nickel finish. The early one has plain smooth Walnut.

I bought the Colt with a pair of custom Colt supplied walnut grips (gorgeous by the way) already on the Colt and asked for the original grips to close the deal. I would have bought it if he had said no. I guess I might have gotten a pair of 3rd gen grips instead of the originals. Oh well!
