The engine used a mechanical direct-fuel-injection system and had a displacement of 183 cubic inches, 2998cc. The 300SD engine produced 120 horsepower at 4350 rpm and ...I initially installed the injection pump on my newly rebuilt engine with the crankshaft at TDC. The engine ran pretty well but had some light smoke so I got ready to adjust the injection timing. It looked like the manual says to set the crank to 24 BTDC prior to installing the injection pump. I removed and reinstalled the pump at 24.The OM617 into a Ranger has been on my list of ideas to do for a long time. I've had a lot of vehicles, but my favorites have been my '88 Ranger with a 2.9L V6 and my '84 Mercedes 300SD 3.0L 5-cylinder turbo diesel. My Mercedes is my daily driver, and the engine has 337K miles on it and the engine hasn't been rebuilt. I get 29 MPG, too.Just go 22re or 3rzfe and turbo it, they can make a-lot more power than either of the v6’s with better mpg. If you dont care about brand or resale value, go with a 6bt, maybe a 4bt but that has worse mpg, an om617 would work too but not nearly as reliable as a cumminsUse a small amount of silicone sealant (or anaerobic sealant) on the new water pump gasket. Be careful not to overtighten the fan clutch bolts and I recommend you pup some blue LokTite on the threads before assembly. Added a RC 4.5 lift and their steering stabilized, and added new 15” method wheels and new 31” MT tires. JCR bumpers front and rear with their headache rack.

I had mostly been looking at pre-1995 Pickups with the gear-driven RF1A transfer case. While cruising Facebook Marketplace I stumbled on a semi-local 1986 Toyota 4Runner that had already been swapped with a 1985 OM617.

I picked up this $600 1997 4Runner 5VZ/A340 4x4 (rear e-locker) with roughly 250k miles and it was SHOT! Completely rusted out even though the body doesn't show it. Oct 2, 2016 · The mbz om617.950 motor is already a huge improvement, by huge i mean costs less than rebuilding the 230, add to that todays fuels and oils with all the additives needed that i cant buy in California, diesel just seems best option and om617 is very similar in size, weight and power output plus fuel is cheapest with 2x better mpg. That extra 5" is big as the OM617/transmission transfer case measures 70", which is really pushing the envelope lengthwise as far as squeezing it into an FJ40 with a 90" wheelbase.
