It feels thick in your hands. The 870 (or even a 500) felt way more responsive to me. If you just want an entry level beginner pump shotgun - go with the 870. The 500 is more general purpose.From what I've read, the Mossberg 835 uses a barrel that has the diameter of a 10-gauge . . . and that's why the Mossberg 835 is really the only gun that will have a good pattern with a 3.5" shell. Any gun with a normal 12-gauge barrel is basically not meant to shoot the amount of shot and the amount of pressure that a 3.5" shell offers.

Without a doubt the Benelli has better quality than the Mosseberg. It's also easier to clean, can go longer between cleanings and is lighter in weight. The Mossberg is a decent gun for the money and you could do worse. Neither is a great choice for light target loads although the SBE II will cycle lighter field loads.

I love my Benelli NOVA. I have a Mossberg 835. Great gun. But its not a Winchester1300 for sure. I have a Winchester 120 and 1300. They are not turkey guns though. Love the way they feel and function. The only thing nice about my 835 is the camo and the 3 1/2 turkey loads. I would never get rid of the Winchester.
