There is only ONE fairly certain way of loading larger shot, (7-1/2), in a 410 MEC machine that works with any consistency. 1) Polish the inside of the drop tube. (You have already done this). 2) Make sure your shot is well graphite'd. Add graphite to the shot if necessary, before attempting to load it.
I bought a complete Mec die set with all the parts I needed from Ballistic Products for $90. You may find a used 12 ga Mec 600 Jr for less than that, as I have seen them go for $75 to $100 in my area. I used to swap dies and other parts to change my 12 ga Mec to load 10 ga but eventually bought a new 10 ga press because I was loading alot and ...The reason for the cracked or tore hulls is because of the gun you are shooting. A .410 shotgun that has a very wide open chamber or very tight chamber will cause the shell to expand or shrink and it will burn the pedals/crimp at the end of the shell. This usually will cause that crack and deformation when you go to crimp the shell.Some of the older 600's didn't have the Pro Check, but that's easily added and I think it helps speed things up to some extent. Basically, a 600 is a 600, as far as what it does and how it operates. The 700 Versamec is also basically just a 600 in that it would also load 3 inch shells. I just loaded 25 rounds of .410 using the UCB in my very old 600Jr. The powder side of the bar is equipped with a red plastic powder baffle. I used Winchester AAHS hulls, Claybuster CB5050-410HS wads, Winchester 209 primers, and 1/2 oz. of Eagle #9 "magnum" shot. My desired powder charge was 16.5 grains of Hodgdon 110.
