Interesting, I recently bought a 2000 Vulcan 800 Classic with 17K+ miles on it and there is no "knocking". The bike had not been taken care of by the PO, and some TLC on my part has gotten it running much better/smoother. The bike physically goes into neutral but will not start unless the stand is up and clutch in even when in nuetral. (Which I assume is due to the light being connected to the safety mechanism in the bike.)

I have owned my VN800 for about 5 years and never had a problem that I didn't create myself. Your valves could become damaged if you never check the clearance/redo the shims on them. Or maybe you like to rev it up loud before the engine is warm.
