It would do it all by itself and it sounded like it was going to explode! When it first happened the check engine light came on so I close so I drove right to the dealership and showed the Service Manager.

I haven't looked in the wheel well of a WL, but your description sounds similar to the wheel wells in the prior generation WK2s, which have a felt/carpet like lining. I think it helps reduce road noise from the tires. I drove through some sloppy road conditions last week, then took the 4xe to the car wash, and the wells cleaned up just fine.
