Get some rtv gasket maker put a good bead around the plate and put it on, let the gasket sealer set for a few mins before fully tightening. It is however a waste of money to use the synthetic fluid in the differentials. I also have a D44 LSD rear. I paid equivalent to less than $25 for enough 85W140 fluid for both differentials. I have always liked Mobil synthetic products. However, for our 1999 Jeep XJ Cherokee Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25" axles with ARB Lockers, I use Mopar 75W-120 synthetic gear lube. I use this same lube in the 9.25" and 11.5" AAM axles in the 2005 Ram 3500 4WD truck.

The easiest would be the suction gun, which would get most of it out. The harder way, would involve pulling both axleshafts, the driveshaft, and then the differential, because the "cover" is your axle beam. I vote for the first one.
