Chevy malibu cranks but wont start.

94, 111,000 miles, 6 speed. this morning going to work it just quit on the freeway. When I got to the side of the road, it will crank freely, but won't start. It seems to want to start, (fires or backfires) but doesn't run. Checked the fuel rail, has fuel but doesn't seem like enough pressure.
